I met war correspondent Lalage Snow at the Edinburgh Literature Festival in 2018. She was presenting her book, War gardens, where she portraits people living in conflict-torn places such as Gaza, Israel, Ukraine and Afghanistan. But she focuses on their gardens: on the human need to potter, to make things grow and create a tranquil space.
Gardens may seem like a trivial topic, but Snow had a purpose. Working as a war correspondent, she had noticed how people quickly become "immune" to gruesome images of war and how the news agenda swiftly moves on to other stories, while the horrors continue.
She hoped the book could build awareness and empathy and show that us humans are alike, no matter where in the world we come from or our circumstances. That we all just want the same: To live normal lives in peace. War gardens was published five years ago, and is, sadly, even more relevant today.
