Feature - Harris Tweed

Project

Reportage for D2/ Dagens Næringsliv

Date

October 2011

Photographer

Jimmy Linus

Location

Isle of Lewis and Harris

Harris Tweed is a unique material. It is stated in the British law that this coarse woollen fabric must be woven by hand in the Hebrides, in people's homes. This helps create jobs on these windswept islands. But the tweed-tradition has been hanging by a thread many times, as demand has gone up and down. I visited the Isle of Harris when tweed, yet again, was all the rage and met all sorts of people working in the industry, an ex oil- worker, a former shoe seller from Bristol and a male model. I tried to weave a little, but soon created a tangled mess. I will stick to writing.
