One of the joys of being a feature writer is that I get to go behind the daily news agenda and seek out angles that can add something new and surprising. So when there was the independence referendum in Scotland in 2014 I left the polling updates to the news agencies and did this take: I zoomed in on how humour can be used in politics.
Because if there is one thing the Scots are amazing at, it is being funny. And when the Better Together campaign launched a rather misjudged political advert, the YES side was ready to ridicule and had a field day making increasingly creative memes. Thus, the story of the #Patronising BTlady became a new and interesting phenomenon in political discourse.
