Feature - Home of golf

My first story for Dagens Næringsliv, the Norwegian equivalent of the Financial Times. It all started in 2002, when I moved to Glasgow. (Yes, I was in love with a man in a kilt.) I was a newly qualified journalist and started freelancing straight away. My first story was simple: A travel feature from St Andrews, the cradle of golf. Surely, the Norwegian press would snap it up? But none of my contacts there would buy it. I became desperate, thought: “might as well” and sent it to what I considered the epitome of Norwegian feature writing, Dagens Næringslivs's weekend magazine. With sweaty palms, I dialled the number for the editorial office and got hold of the commissioning editor. She said: - Yes, we are interested. But we have a problem with the price. I gasped. Was ready to reduce. But she continued: - You're too cheap. We´ll double it. And that was the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
